Which Mobile Platform First?

If you’re launching a new mobile app and you only have enough time or money or marketing capital or audience focus or available bandwidth to hit one platform really well, choose iPhone. This only applies, of course, if you are actually launching a mobile app and not an app that would, by its nature, be better suited for a tablet.

The answer to this question may be changing soon to Android. After all, it’s tough to ignore the numbers or the predictions of a tech billionaire. But for now, launch on iPhone first.

There is an intangible clout factor that comes with having an iPhone app that makes a big splash, and then building an Android version and Windows Phone version and BlackBerry version, etc. It very rarely happens the other way around.

This is one of the most frequent questions that people ask me when they’re considering building an app, and with good reason. It’s important to get the launch right. That’s where the lion’s share of your investment will be made, and that’s when your audience will determine whether you have what it takes to launch something worthy of their attention.
